If you rent a place out on Airbnb or Vrbo here in Anchorage, the clock is ticking. Every short-term rental in the city has to be registered with the municipality by July thirtieth.

Here's the good news. Signing up is completely free. The portal's already open online, and once you're in, the city gives you a registration number you have to post right on your listing.

The platforms are playing along too. Airbnb and Vrbo will now require that number on every Anchorage listing, so skipping it isn't really an option if you want to stay live.

So what counts as short-term? Anything you rent out for fewer than thirty days at a time. That sweeps in the bed and breakfasts too, which used to register separately and now fall under the same system.

To be clear, this isn't a new tax. Short-term rentals here already pay the same twelve percent bed tax the hotels do. The city just wants a real headcount of how many rentals are out there and what they're doing to our housing.
