Wasilla needed backup fast.

After a multi-family home fire hit during the same windstorm knocking out power across the Valley, the Red Cross moved quickly and opened an emergency shelter at the Menard Sports Complex. Families who lost everything showed up cold and exhausted, and volunteers had warming stations running before sunrise. The timing couldn’t have been worse — outages, debris, and dangerous gusts made it nearly impossible for people to stay in their homes. Crews have been juggling disaster calls while neighbors bring blankets, food, and whatever they can spare. The shelter isn’t just a place to sleep; it’s become a lifeline for folks who had zero safe options in this weather.
