The city is mapping out a full 20-year wastewater overhaul, and it’s a major pivot from the patchwork septic setups built in the 1980s.
With Wasilla now one of the fastest-growing cities in the entire country, the old system can’t support the density that’s already arriving along Parks Highway and into the core.
The plan aims to shift homes and businesses toward centralized infrastructure so vertical building can actually happen. That means fewer failing tanks, fewer backup risks, and a smoother path for developers who’ve been running into hard limits on what they can build.
A modern system also brings cleaner waterways and more predictable operations for the city. Planners say this long-range move sets the foundation for the next era of growth—one that looks a lot more like an urban hub than a spread-out commuter town. And it’s arriving right on time as new commercial projects stack up across the Valley.
