Two Rivers wants its own school

Families in Two Rivers have resubmitted an application to start a charter school.

The community sits about thirty miles outside Fairbanks and many parents say local education options are limited.

The proposal would create a small charter school focused on serving students in the rural area. Charter schools operate within public school districts but use different teaching approaches and smaller programs.

The application had previously been denied, but supporters revised the proposal and submitted it again. Parents and organizers say they want a school that better fits the needs of families living outside Fairbanks.

If approved, the school would operate within the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District. Charter schools still receive public funding but have more flexibility in how they run programs.

The district will decide in April whether the new charter school can move forward.
