this wild coast is protected now

A wild stretch of Alaska coast just got locked in for good.

Out past Homer, across the bay, there's a remote island most of us will only ever see from a boat. The last private piece of it just got handed over to the state park system. That means the whole island is now public land, protected for good.

It's about twenty-four acres at a spot called Herring Pete's Cove. The water around it is full of life, think seals, sea otters, whales, and streams thick with salmon. Black bears and seabirds work the shoreline too.

A conservation group bought the land and gave it to the park instead of letting it get developed. Over the last few years, they've protected more than fifty acres connected to that same park.

For anyone who's kayaked or fished that bay, this keeps it the way you remember it. No cabins going up, no gates, just coast that stays open to all of us.
