Amazon just switched on next-day delivery for a lot of orders right here in town. For eligible items, what used to take a while can now show up the very next day.

If you've been here a few years, you remember how it used to go. Some packages took two weeks or more before they landed on your porch, and a two-day promise often turned into next week.

Then Amazon opened its own delivery station in Anchorage back in late 2023, and that knocked the wait down to about two days. Now, on the right orders, it's down to a single day.

Here's how they're pulling it off. Boxes leave a warehouse down in Washington state, fly into the Anchorage airport every morning, then get sorted and dropped at doorsteps around town that same day.

And the timing isn't an accident, with the biggest summer shopping days right around the corner. For a lot of us up here, getting close to Lower 48 speeds without paying a fortune to ship is a real change.

It won't cover every order, but for everyday things, the days of staring at a tracking page for two weeks are finally fading.
