and now there's federal money aimed at finding them.

Federal broadband programs are pushing roughly a billion dollars into Alaska through one program alone, and there are four more stacked behind it. Add them up and it runs into the billions.

What it buys is not glamorous. Subsea cable, fiber in the ground, microwave links, and satellite where nothing else reaches.

The mapping part matters more than it sounds. There's a village of six or seven hundred people that the official maps had simply not counted as needing service. More than five thousand additional properties and remote communities turned up the same way.

You can't fund a connection to a house the map says isn't there. That's how a place stays invisible.

One of our senators put the point bluntly. He said it sounds like a lot of money, but it isn't about the money. It's about connecting every single Alaskan.

He also described sitting in those rooms asking what about the places that don't have any G at all. Not five G. Any G. That was the actual argument.

Building it is the slow part. Federal permitting can run five years, and Alaska hands you about one short summer a year to dig.
