the empty midtown lot wakes up

and what's going up there is unlike anything else in the neighborhood.

You know that big vacant lot on 36th Avenue near the Old Seward Highway, the one that's sat quiet for years. Chugach Alaska Corporation just broke ground on a project they're calling Village in the City.

The first building will hold offices, tribal services, and something new for Midtown: a permanent home for a heritage museum that's been waiting since 2022 for a real place to tell the region's story. That's the kind of anchor a neighborhood builds an identity around.

The corporation owns the land and is donating it for the whole campus. We're talking four and a third acres right in the heart of Midtown, which almost never opens up for a project like this.

And they're not stopping at one building. The plan adds two apartment buildings, on-site childcare, and space for shops and restaurants, all within walking distance of what's already there.

The mayor called the coming museum a place where neighbors, tourists, and school groups can connect with the first people of this region. The first phase is set to wrap by the end of summer 2028. For a lot that most of us had written off, that's a pretty big turn.
