the campground's getting bear-proofed

and it's overdue, because right now one metal box is all thirty-two campsites have to share.

Chilkoot Lake, just outside Haines, is one of those places people drive for. Folks come to fish, to camp, and to watch the brown bears work the river. But that whole campground has had just a single food storage container, which is a lot of hungry visitors and only one safe place to stash a cooler.

That's changing later this month. A national group called Defenders of Wildlife donated two more bear-resistant lockers so campers have somewhere to lock up food, toiletries, and anything with a strong smell. Their coexistence rep says both tent campers and car campers should use them.

Here's why it matters. When bears start finding easy meals around tents, they keep coming back, and that rarely ends well for the bear or the people. Keeping the food locked away keeps everybody safer. The two containers plus shipping them up to Haines ran more than five thousand dollars, which tells you how serious the effort is.

The same group sent two more lockers over to Eagle Beach near Juneau. The campground itself should open later this summer once the park brings on more staff. For a bear-viewing spot this loved, it's a small fix that goes a long way.
