the cabin everyone will want

and it sits right on the edge of a famous glacier.

The Forest Service just opened a brand new cabin on the shore of Mendenhall Lake in Juneau, looking straight out at the Mendenhall Glacier. They cut the ribbon this week, and reservations are already open.

It carries a local Native name that means the house in the face of the glacier, the first cabin in the area to get one. It's two stories, sleeps about ten, and the outdoor gathering area fits dozens more.

This one's a first in another way too. It's the first Forest Service cabin around there with electricity, so you get lights and a heater on top of the usual wood stove, and the bottom floor is built to roll right in for wheelchairs.

It wasn't cheap. The whole thing ran about eight hundred and ten thousand dollars, covered by the Forest Service and a handful of Alaska partners, and it's raised up on piers to survive a glacier flood.

Here's the catch. The rangers think this will be the most booked cabin in the entire Tongass, more than any other in Southeast. You can reserve it up to six months out, so if you want it, you'll be racing the rest of Alaska for a night.
