Anchorage now requires every short term rental in the city to register with the municipality. The deadline was July thirtieth, and here's the part people don't expect. Registering doesn't cost a dime.

The Assembly passed this back in December, and the sponsor's point was pretty simple. The city has been operating on assumptions and best guesses about how many rentals are out there, and that's no way to run a housing conversation.

Here's what counts. If you rent a place out for less than thirty days, that's a short term rental. Places that were permitted as bed and breakfasts got folded into this too.

And it isn't just a form in a drawer. Platforms like Airbnb now want a registration number before your listing goes live.

Short term rentals here already pay the same twelve percent bed tax the hotels do, so the city isn't chasing new money on this one. It's chasing a count.

The reason it matters to the rest of us is housing. Anchorage leans on the visitor industry, and it's also short on places for people to actually live, and every nightly rental sits on both sides of that line.
