ten years in the making

and Fairbanks finally put a shovel in the ground.

We're getting a brand new animal shelter, going up on Leasure Street in South Fairbanks, right behind American Tire and Auto, just off South Cushman.

If you've followed this one, you know it's been talked about for more than ten years. So actually seeing crews break ground feels big for a lot of us who'd half given up on it.

Plans for a replacement shelter have come and gone for years, so the question of when finally has a real answer.

Borough staff, the contractors, animal control folks, and even the mayor showed up to mark the moment. There was also an adoptable dog named Iris on hand, which feels about right for a shelter kickoff.

Here's the part that likely saved taxpayers a chunk of money. The winning builder came in about nine point four million dollars under what the borough's own engineers expected the job to cost.

Now, this isn't an overnight thing. Construction's expected to run a few years, with the doors set to open sometime in the spring or summer of 2028.

Still, for every Fairbanks family that's ever adopted a pet or chased down a runaway dog, a real building beats another decade of just talking about one.
