Athletes from across the state gathered in Anchorage for the 2026 Special Olympics Alaska Winter Games. The three day competition brought together competitors from places like Anchorage, Fairbanks, Kodiak, and the Mat-Su.

Events were held across the city, including alpine skiing and snowboarding at Hilltop Ski Area. Cross country skiing and snowshoeing took place at East High School, while floor hockey games were played at Clark Middle School.

Athletes spent months training in their home communities before qualifying for the state games. The weekend gives them a chance to compete, connect with other athletes, and celebrate their achievements.

This year’s event also marks the 25th anniversary of the 2001 Special Olympics World Winter Games that were held in Anchorage.

For many athletes and families, the games are as much about community as competition.
