Snow Art Takes Over Downtown

Sculptors have started carving massive snow blocks ahead of the Fur Rondy competition in Anchorage. In preparation for public display starting 2/27, teams are already out there shaping, shaving, and stacking as the clock ticks toward judging.

What looks like a pile of plowed snow right now will soon be full scale sculptures that will decorate downtown until March 13th.

Fur Rondy brings artists from Alaska and beyond, all competing to transform frozen slabs into detailed designs. It is not quick work. Each block weighs thousands of pounds and every cut has to count.

Downtown businesses feel it too. Foot traffic picks up, families wander between sculptures, and visitors bundle up to see what gets revealed each day.

It is one of those late winter moments that reminds us Anchorage still leans into snow instead of hiding from it.
