Some Anchorage stations are charging six dollars a gallon for diesel right now, and the ripple effects go way past the pump. Three of our biggest shipping companies raised their fuel surcharges this month, which means everything that arrives by barge costs more too.

Alaska Marine Lines bumped its surcharge from 11 to over 18 percent. Matson went from about 20 to nearly 27 percent. Those increases roll straight into the price of groceries, building materials, and anything else that rides a ship to get here.

Alaska Airlines raised baggage fees this month too, pointing directly to fuel costs. For families already stretching, this hits the grocery run, the gas tank, and the next online order all at once. Inflation just hit its highest point in almost two years, and Alaska is feeling every cent of it.
