old city hall becomes a library

And the work to turn that eighty-year-old landmark on Fourth Avenue into a real public library is set to start this summer.

Old City Hall downtown, the one plenty of us walk right past without a second look, is about to get a whole new life. The plan turns its ground floor into a downtown branch of the Anchorage library, in the space Visit Anchorage uses today.

Doors are expected to open in early 2027. The renovation is being paid for with a two-and-a-half-million-dollar relief grant the state signed off on, and there's a deadline on that money, so breaking ground now is the smart move.

Here's the part I love. The money to actually run the library comes from a trust now worth more than seven million dollars, left behind by a longtime Anchorage resident who passed years ago.

She asked for just one thing: that it fund a downtown library for the people who live, work, and visit here. Decades later, that wish is finally getting built into a building we've all driven past for years.

It's a rare kind of downtown story, an old landmark saved and handed back to the rest of us for something we can actually use.
