Anchorage just redesigned its city seal, and honestly… why.

We’re still dealing with housing shortages, rough roads, and basic city services that feel stretched thin. This wasn’t driven by a crisis or a clear need, just a decision that suddenly became a priority. The old seal worked, people recognized it, and it wasn’t breaking anything.

Design work, staff time, meetings, surveys, and eventually replacing signs, vehicles, uniforms, and official materials all cost real money. Even if the rollout is slow, that spending adds up, and we still don’t have a clean number for what this entire exercise costs taxpayers. That matters, especially when every budget conversation lately comes with tradeoffs.

A new seal doesn’t lower rent, fix traffic, or make winter maintenance faster. It just changes the look of City Hall. And we’re left wondering why this is where energy and attention went right now.
