mat-su overruled the mayor

The Mat-Su Borough Assembly overrode the mayor's veto and is moving forward with a data center land partnership.

The mat-su Mayor vetoed a plan to partner the borough with a private company to market public land for a large-scale data processing facility. She said the company had not been fully vetted and the deal could put the borough at risk.

The Assembly had already approved the partnership in a 5-to-2 vote before the mayor shut it down. But two weeks later, they came back and overrode the veto with only one member voting against it.

That means the borough is now officially moving forward with this company to position the Mat-Su as a destination for major tech infrastructure. Data centers bring construction jobs and long-term tax revenue, but they also raise questions about energy use and public land.

The valley just made a big bet and not everyone at borough hall agrees it was the right one. The valley just bet on big tech.
