Mat-Su Carries Alaska

Palmer and Wasilla continue to outpace the rest of the state, now responsible for more than 60 percent of Alaska’s new construction.

Daily Alaska staff · December 29, 2025 · Anchorage

Palmer and Wasilla now account for more than 60 percent of all new construction statewide, even as much of Alaska sees slower growth. New homes, subdivisions, and commercial builds keep stacking up along the Parks Highway and throughout the Valley. While other regions deal with softer demand, the Mat-Su keeps pulling families priced out of Anchorage and workers chasing space, yards, and newer housing.

Population growth hasn’t stalled, and builders haven’t backed off either. That construction surge is propping up local jobs, keeping real estate steady, and quietly reshaping where Alaska’s economic center of gravity sits. The Valley isn’t just a bedroom community anymore. It’s where Alaska is actively being built.
