kodiak is getting 30 new homes

The U.S. Coast Guard announced it awarded a contract to build thirty new houses at its base on Kodiak Island. The homes will be fifteen duplexes, with a mix of three-bedroom and four-bedroom units.

The contract is valued at about eighty-two million dollars. Construction is expected to wrap up in 2028.

Along with the new housing, the project also includes a brand new childcare center. That facility is expected to serve more than two hundred children.

An outdoor play area will be built alongside the center as well. The whole package is designed to support families who are stationed at the base.

Coast Guard leadership said the new homes and the childcare center represent a significant investment in the people who serve there. The goal is to make sure military families have what they need to thrive.

This is the final phase of a larger housing effort at the base. In 2025, the first phase delivered fifty new housing units at the same site.

The timing also comes just one day after the Coast Guard announced that two of its new Arctic security vessels will be homeported in Kodiak and Seward. The base is getting a lot of investment right now.
