kmart's getting a museum

The empty K-Mart on Airport Way in Fairbanks is about to become Alaska's biggest antique car museum.

Daily Alaska staff · May 4, 2026 · Fairbanks

Fairbanks just turned the old K-Mart into a museum.

The Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum is moving out of Wedgewood Resort and into the empty K-Mart shell at 3121 Airport Way. Anyone who's driven past that big box near the airport knows it's been sitting half quiet for years.

Grand re-opening is set for June with the exact date still being finalized. The new space is so much bigger they can finally show their whole collection at once. We're talking 135 antique cars, plus motorcycles, early snowmachines, and a handful of vintage Alaska aircraft.

The aviation side is happening through a partnership with the Pioneer Air Museum, who'll bring in around five planes to start with. Amazon's fulfillment center already moved into part of the building, so the lights are coming back on across the whole property. For locals and visitors hitting Airport Way on the way to the airport, this is one of the better reuse stories the Interior's had in a while.
