juneau's power bill could jump

If you live in Juneau, your power bill might be climbing.

Juneau's main power company is asking to raise its rates, and it's not a small bump. If regulators sign off, the typical household could see its monthly electric bill climb somewhere around 18 to 20 percent. On an everyday bill, that's a jump you'd actually feel.

The company points to two things: plain old inflation, and big upgrades to its system. Keeping poles, lines, and equipment running in Southeast weather isn't cheap. So they want customers to help cover those rising costs.

Here's the part worth holding onto, though. This isn't a done deal, state regulators still have to review the request and decide how much actually goes through. That review takes time, so nothing would hit your bill overnight.

Still, the timing stings, with energy costs creeping up all over Alaska. Tight gas down in Anchorage, pricey fuel out in the western villages, and now higher power in the capital. It all adds up to the same story we keep living, energy here just keeps getting more expensive.
