juneau's old theater lives again

An 86-year-old Juneau theater just got its doors reopened by people who refused to let it go.

The old 20th Century Theater in downtown Juneau is coming back under a new name. A small crew of film and arts lovers is calling it Aurora Grand, a name they say reflects where they are headed, not where they are starting from.

They started the revival by literally clearing out decades of debris from the back rooms behind the screen. The building has been part of Juneau's downtown since before most of our grandparents were born, and this kind of hands-on restoration is exactly how good community spaces survive.

The vision behind Aurora Grand is to bring arts and film programming to Southeast Alaska at a scale the region has not seen before. For a capital city that can feel cut off from the cultural venues found in Anchorage or Fairbanks, this is a meaningful addition to what is available downtown.

Juneau's downtown is also watching a separate $60 million entertainment complex work through planning commission right now. Aurora Grand is the grassroots, community-driven side of that same energy, and for locals who care about Juneau's heart, both matter.

Old buildings tell good stories when somebody loves them enough to listen.
