juneau hit pause on demolition

Juneau was about to spend millions demolishing an entire downtown neighborhood this summer, and the Assembly just pulled the plug on the timeline. They voted to delay Telephone Hill demolition until they hear back from developers who might want to build something there first.

Drafting the request for qualifications alone will take a couple months. Then it needs at least 90 days for developer responses. That pushes any real decision on the site to October at the earliest.

The neighborhood sits in one of the best locations in downtown Juneau. The city bought the property from the state and landed on a plan to demolish and rebuild, but not everyone on the Assembly agreed that wiping it clean was the right call. Some members want to see what developers would actually propose before the city spends millions tearing everything down.
