How do we fix this?

A new municipal audit shows major gaps in how city money is tracked and approved. Several departments were flagged for weak oversight and messy record keeping.

At the Harry J. McDonald Memorial Center in Eagle River, operators changed budgets without approval and spent past contract limits. Year end bonuses were paid even after those overruns.

Grant records across health, transit, and emergency programs did not match internal reports, and some filings were late. Auditors also found school building access controls were loose, with doors unsecured and key fob logs out of sync.

The Anchorage Equal Rights Commission missed deadlines and lacked solid financial tracking. The Assembly is set to review the findings on February 17 and decide what gets fixed first.

When audits keep flagging the same oversight problems, it may be time for new leadership.
