houston's big land deal

And the state wants to sell off more than thirty-one square miles to make it happen.

The land sits just north of Houston, out past Wasilla along the Parks Highway. The state's economic development agency wants to buy it up and turn the whole stretch into one big industrial district.

The plan includes a rail and freight hub tied into the Alaska Railroad, power and utility corridors, and the piece everyone's talking about, large scalable data centers.

Think about that. The whole state only has about eight data centers right now, some of the fewest in the country. Dropping one out in the Valley would be a real shift for us.

But not everyone out there is cheering, and the state's own paperwork spells out why.

We could lose public access to that land and the trails people already use, plus there are open questions about water and wildlife habitat. For folks who hunt, ride, and mush out there, that lands close to home.

The agency running it says nothing's locked in yet, and any final call comes only after they talk with the borough and local residents.

So this is a proposal, not a done deal. Public comment stays open through August nineteenth, so if you live and play near Houston, now's the moment your voice counts.
