Haines just lost its only pizza shop.

Alpenglow Woodfired Pizza shut down last week with just five days notice to the town. It was one of the few year-round restaurants in Haines and the only place to grab a slice.

The owner posted online that he never turned a profit in any year he ran the business. He had been behind on rent since January and food costs kept climbing with no end in sight.

He was in the final stages of getting a beer and wine license to try and close the financial gap, but it came too late. For a small Southeast Alaska town, losing a year-round restaurant hits different than it would in Anchorage or Fairbanks.

One less place to gather in a town already small enough.
