Government Peak is getting a makeover

Borough is updating the Government Peak Recreation Area plan 2026. The drafted plan will quietly decide where new trails go, where facilities expand, and which areas stay protected near Hatcher Pass. It shapes how crowded the parking gets, how far trail systems stretch, and how recreation grows around Palmer and the Butte.

For nearby homeowners, this plan matters more than people think. Trail placement and access points can raise property appeal or funnel traffic straight past certain neighborhoods. For visitors, it decides whether the area feels spread out and natural or packed and stressed during peak seasons.

Nothing is being built tomorrow, and the public comment period will open in February before the final plan is released in March.
