future alaska doctors caught a break

and it lands as a 25 million dollar gift.

Here in Anchorage, a lot of our future doctors get their start at the university's health sciences building, training through a regional medical school program that Alaska shares with four nearby states. That program just got a huge boost.

A family of philanthropists donated 25 million dollars to set up a new scholarship fund. It'll cover half the tuition for 30 students across the five states, and that's a real dent in what it costs to become a doctor.

There's a focus to it, too. The money targets students training to be rural doctors, and students in a track built around tribal health care and traditional healing. In a state like ours, where so many communities go without a doctor nearby, that aim hits home.

The timing matters. This comes right as the federal government is getting ready to cap how much students can borrow for medical school. So for a lot of these students, a scholarship like this could be the difference between finishing the program or walking away from it.

For young Alaskans dreaming about a white coat, and for the small towns hoping to finally land a local doctor, this one quietly changes the path.
