Free plans change everything

Anchorage just removed one of the biggest barriers to building housing — the design phase.

Daily Alaska staff · April 2, 2026 · Anchorage

Anchorage rolled out preapproved plans for tiny homes and backyard units, and they’re built for Alaska weather. That means no starting from scratch, no long design process, and way fewer hoops just to get plans approved. You can literally pick a design and move forward faster.

These are Accessory Dwelling Units, so think backyard rentals, in-law units, or small standalone homes on existing lots. Homeowners can now add extra space without dealing with custom architecture costs or months of waiting. That alone cuts both time and money.

This hits right in the middle of Anchorage’s housing shortage. Instead of waiting on big developers, this lets regular homeowners add units across the city. More small builds, spread out, faster.

And with duplex zoning already opened up, this stacks on top of that shift. More density, but it still fits the neighborhoods we already have.
