And it's about to reach hundreds more Alaska families who'd otherwise walk into court completely alone.

Alaska Legal Services is the biggest provider of free help for civil cases, things like housing fights, custody, wills, and family safety orders. These are the cases that quietly decide whether a family keeps its home or its kids, and most folks face them with no training and no help.

Right now the group turns away about one person for every single one they help. That's finally changing. The state just raised the share of court fees that funds them, and a well-known Alaska family foundation chipped in a million dollars on top.

A big chunk of that goes toward training regular community members, not just lawyers, to stand up and help people right there in the courtroom. In a state with two hundred scattered communities, that's how you reach a town that's never had a lawyer anywhere close.

Last year alone they handled more than five thousand cases and helped close to fifteen thousand Alaskans. With this new money, they expect to reach around eight hundred more households every year.
