fourth avenue got a grocery store

and it's stocked with the stuff people used to mail order from Hawaii.

Pacific Corner Market just held its grand opening in Sunshine Plaza, right at Fourth and D downtown. It's a mother and son operation, and the shelves lean Asian and Pacific Islander.

We're talking pork buns, Spam rolls, kimchi chips, canned corned beef, Hawaiian sodas. Also laundry detergent, because a market downtown still has to be a market.

Across the plaza, Midnight Market moved into a bigger space this summer after five years at its old spot. That one stays open until three in the morning, which if you've ever worked a closing shift downtown, you already know is the whole point.

And Lucky Grocery and Deli has been on Fourth Avenue for twenty years now, still doing dry goods, fresh fruit, cheese and milk.

So that's three places to buy actual food on a stretch of Fourth Avenue people have been writing off for years.

There's more coming too. The Post Office Mall redevelopment is expected to bring condos, an indoor market, and a supermarket in the basement by the end of twenty twenty-seven.

That's the part worth watching. A downtown with groceries in it is a downtown people can actually live in, and somebody is clearly betting on that.
