October sixth. Two questions on the ballot, both about the ballot itself.

Question one: should every borough election be counted entirely by hand, with the counting machines banned from official results? The former assemblywoman behind it gathered the signatures herself. Her argument is money staying local: borough voters do the counting and get paid for it.

The borough mayor pushes back, saying hand counts cost more and catch less. And the borough already runs a hand audit. Last year, over thirty-three hundred audited ballots matched the machines perfectly. Nobody has done the math on hand-counting everything.

Question two: move borough elections from October to November so they line up with the state and federal races. Supporters say plenty of people simply don't know October elections exist. Skeptics worry local races drown under the big campaigns.

Turnout today runs around one in four. If either change passes, it starts in twenty twenty-seven.
