Fairbanks sends them out

Six mushers just hit the trail in Fairbanks.

The 2026 Yukon Quest Alaska 750 kicked off in downtown Fairbanks with teams leaving right outside the Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center.

Only six mushers are racing this year, but the challenge is still full-scale with a 750 mile route through Interior Alaska. Jason Mackey was first off the line, heading straight into deep winter conditions. Fans lined the start chute, soaking up sunshine and cheering as teams rolled out.

Alongside the main race, eight more mushers launched on the 80 mile Fun Run toward Pleasant Valley and back. The smaller field stood out, especially compared to past Quest years. Still, the atmosphere downtown felt energetic and familiar.

For Fairbanks, this race is still a winter anchor event. Cold, dogs, snow, and a whole lot of tradition.
