Fairbanks is quietly planning its next two decades.
The Fairbanks North Star Borough just started rewriting its comprehensive plan, the document that decides where housing, roads, and development go.
Officials say the process will take about two years and starts with public surveys and in person meetings. Housing is a major focus, especially with more military families moving into the region. Food security and local supply issues are also getting new attention this time around.
They’re also taking a hard look at the Fairbanks airport and its growing role in cargo and economic activity.
Comprehensive plans don’t pour concrete, but they decide where it’s allowed. Once adopted, they influence zoning, permits, and future investment.
For a market short on housing, these decisions matter more than people realize.
