Before we get into how to buy one of those lots — yes, I know I mispronounced the river but hey, done is better than perfect.

A lot of people asked how to actually get one of those Fairbanks lots along the Chatanika River so here's exactly how it works.

The Fairbanks North Star Borough is using a three part system to sell these 54 parcels. The first and most interesting piece is the lottery. A ticket costs $25 and you can buy a ticket on as many individual parcels as you want. The catch is you can only win one. If your ticket gets pulled on five different lots, you pick the one you want and the next person in line gets the others.

If the lottery doesn't move all the parcels, unsold lots go to a competitive auction where the highest bid wins. Anything left after that goes over the counter on a first come first served basis.

One thing worth knowing before you get too excited — access to these lots is trail only. No roads in. This is true Alaska backcountry land. Cabins, ATVs, recreational use. Not a place to build a house and commute to town.
