Empty Lot, New Ice

A dead downtown lot just turned into Fairbanks’ newest hangout.

That empty stretch on Lacy Street finally has life again. Festival Fairbanks rolled out the Starter Block this weekend, dropping a fresh outdoor ice rink right in the middle of downtown.

Instead of plywood and weeds, you’ve got skates carving ice and people actually stopping to hang out. It’s meant to be nomadic, so this setup can move and pop up wherever Fairbanks needs energy next.

The winter rink is just the start. Organizers are already planning micro-retail pop-ups for summer, turning the same lot into a place for small local vendors instead of another unused gap downtown.

It already doubled as a centerpiece during Winter Solstice celebrations, with skating, lights, and people lingering longer than usual in the cold. This is the kind of low-cost, high-impact idea downtown Fairbanks has been missing.

Cold or not, Fairbanks shows up when there’s something worth showing up for.
