Downtown finally adds rooms

Downtown Anchorage just added its largest new hotel in over 20 years.

The Wildbirch Hotel officially opened downtown, becoming the largest new hotel Anchorage has seen in more than 20 years. The $50 million project brings 250 rooms right into the city core, along with a full restaurant, an on-site brewery, and a coffee shop designed to pull in locals, not just visitors.

This isn’t a ground-up build, either. The project transformed a long-underused downtown property into something that actually activates the street level. That matters for nearby businesses that rely on foot traffic, conventions, and summer tourism.

Developers are pitching the Wildbirch as a boutique experience, not a generic chain hotel. The timing is intentional, landing as Anchorage keeps pushing to revive downtown after years of empty offices and slow recovery.

More rooms downtown also means more conference capacity, more visitors walking to restaurants, and fewer tourists staying out by the highway. This opening stacks on top of several other downtown projects finally moving from plans to reality.

For the first time in a while, downtown Anchorage feels like it’s gaining momentum instead of losing it.
