Doubling down on trash

Anchorage is doubling its cleanup crews across parks, trails, and public land.

Ten new workers are joining the Healthy Spaces team to tackle litter, illegal dumping, and camps that leave trash behind. Last year alone, crews hauled away more than 2.4 million pounds of waste.

Breakup season is around the corner, and we all know what shows up when the snow melts. This expansion is timed to hit those problem spots fast before summer trail traffic explodes.

The added effort is funded through a $4 surcharge at Solid Waste facilities that took effect in January. Residents can also report trash hotspots so crews can respond quicker.

Our trails get heavy use year round, and this is a direct push to keep them usable and safe.
