Six cruise lines just scratched Alaska's most popular glacier tour.
Carnival, Holland America, Royal Caribbean, MSC, Virgin Voyages, and Allen Marine are all skipping Tracy Arm Fjord this summer. Last August a massive landslide sent part of the mountainside crashing into the water and triggered a tsunami inside the fjord south of Juneau.
Royal Caribbean said the waterway isn't safe for cruise ship navigation right now. Instead of Tracy Arm, ships are rerouting passengers to nearby Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier.
The first ships of the season are due in Ketchikan April 21 and Juneau the following week. This matters because Tracy Arm has been one of the most popular excursions on every Southeast Alaska itinerary for decades.
Thousands of summer visitors will see a completely different glacier than they planned on. For communities that depend on tourism dollars, the ripple effects could show up all season long.
