Can Alaska power AI?

AI data centers are eyeing more land in Alaska, and the Anchorage Assembly is scrambling to start regulating these developments.

These buildings run nonstop servers and use huge amounts of electricity to process artificial intelligence tools and cloud data. The state is encouraging development in Alaska as our cold climate is ideal for cooling systems, but these data centers face very few regulations based on current zoning laws.

Assembly members say the energy demand could strain the city’s power supply. Some of these facilities can use as much electricity as small towns, which raises concerns about grid capacity and long-term energy planning.

Local leaders are now discussing rules before the projects arrive. Ideas include zoning limits, energy requirements, and regulations on where these large data centers could be built inside Anchorage.

The concern isn’t just land use. It’s whether Anchorage utilities could handle the sudden jump in electricity demand if multiple facilities were built.
