A new Alaska Construction General Permit takes effect February 1, changing how construction projects handle stormwater and ground disturbance statewide.

Daily Alaska staff · January 16, 2026 · Anchorage

Every construction project in Alaska just got new rules.

Starting February 1, a brand new statewide Construction General Permit takes effect, replacing the version builders have used since 2021. If a project disturbs ground or manages stormwater, this applies, whether it’s a small site or a major build.

The updated permit changes compliance requirements, timelines, and how operators handle runoff and erosion. That means paperwork, planning, and site prep all shift at once, right in the middle of winter builds and early spring starts.

For contractors and developers, missing the update isn’t an option. Noncompliance can slow projects or stop them entirely. For communities, it affects how fast housing, roads, and commercial projects actually get built.

This one quietly touches nearly every shovel in the ground across the state.
