Brutal winter extends the challenge

The deadline for the Winter Trails Challenge has been extended as below freezing temperatures continue longer than expected in Alaska’s Interior.

The Fairbanks North Star Borough’s annual Winter Trails Challenge is designed to encourage people to get outside before spring arrives. Residents can explore local trails while logging their miles along the way.

Participants track time spent on borough trails like Birch Hill, Chena Lake, and other popular outdoor spots. Skiing, walking, fat biking, and snowshoeing all count toward the challenge.

The program is designed to keep people active during the long Interior winter. It also highlights the trail systems that locals rely on for recreation throughout the season.

Organizers say the challenge this year will extend to May 15th, instead of the usual cut off at the end of April. That gives residents plenty of time to explore different trails and complete the challenge.
