Arctic Valley almost opens

After weeks of waiting, Arctic Valley Ski Area in Anchorage is finally within reach of opening thanks to a big January snowfall.

Daily Alaska staff · January 14, 2026 · Anchorage

After nearly 20 inches of fresh January snow, Arctic Valley Ski Area is targeting a January 17 opening if conditions cooperate.

Tubing is already running, and crews are hustling to pack and shape what just fell. Lifts are close, but the hill still wants about one more foot before everything spins safely.

This storm finally flipped the switch after a slow, thin start to winter in the Chugach foothills. Arctic Valley runs lean and volunteer-powered, so timing and coverage matter more here than anywhere else.

When it opens, it’s usually the fastest way for Anchorage families to get laps in without driving out of town.
