anchorage wants more on your lot

and on the right block, that could mean a duplex, a triplex, even a little cluster of cottages.

Two Anchorage Assembly members just put forward a plan that would let homeowners in certain neighborhoods build more than one home on a single lot. We're talking duplexes, triplexes, fourplexes, and small cottage courts, which are little groups of homes around a shared yard.

This isn't a citywide rezone, and nobody's forcing anything. It's an opt-in overlay, so it only kicks in where a property owner chooses to use it. The areas it targets are the corridors already served by main roads, bus lines, and utilities.

There are limits built in. Building height tops out around thirty feet in standard residential areas and forty feet in others, so new places are meant to fit the scale of the block.

The whole point is to add homes inside the city we've already built, instead of pushing further out. Anchorage has been stuck in a housing crunch for years, and this is one way other cities have added options without tearing everything down.

If you own property along one of those corridors, this would change what you're allowed to build on your own land. The city's holding a worksession June nineteenth and two listening sessions June twenty-second and twenty-seventh, with the public hearing set for September fifteenth.
