Anchorage roads getting safer

Anchorage roads just got their funding back.

After weeks of backlash, the state reversed course and restored more than thirty million dollars in federal safety money for Anchorage streets. The projects target some of the most dangerous corridors in town, where crashes and pedestrian deaths have spiked.

Gambell Street is slated for new lighting upgrades to improve visibility at night. A Street is getting additional traffic signals to slow things down and manage turning conflicts. Northern Lights Boulevard will see lane reductions designed to calm traffic and reduce high-speed crashes.

These fixes were nearly pulled after the funding was paused, which set off frustration across the city. For people who walk, bike, or commute these routes every day, the delay felt personal.

Now the projects are back on track, and construction planning can move forward. It is not flashy, but this is the kind of infrastructure that saves lives quietly.

Anchorage has been asking for safer streets for years. This is one of the few times the money actually followed.
