anchorage rethinks your block

The Assembly's bringing back a plan to let more homes get built in Anchorage's regular neighborhoods. The first version stalled out last fall, so two members rewrote it, and it's back on the table June ninth.

The biggest change is size. The old idea let new buildings go up pretty tall, and this one pulls that way down to keep things neighborhood friendly. Single family blocks get the strictest height limit of all.

Why does this matter to us? Anchorage is short on housing, and rents have been climbing for years. Letting a few more units fit on lots we already have is one way to add homes without paving new ground.

This hits hardest in the older parts of town near downtown and midtown, where lots are bigger and demand keeps growing. If you own a single family lot, this could change what you're allowed to build down the road. Think a small second place out back, or splitting a big lot into something that actually makes sense.

For families trying to stay in town instead of moving out to the Valley, more homes close in could be the difference. It's not law yet, and there'll be plenty of back and forth before anything passes. But this is the version that's actually moving, so it's worth watching this time around.
