Anchorage Opens ADU Floodgates

Anchorage rolled out a free ADU approval program designed to speed up backyard rentals and small secondary units across the city.

Anchorage just made building rentals way easier.

The city launched a new program that lets homeowners use free, pre-approved ADU plans. That means fewer delays, fewer surprises, and a much faster path to building a second unit.

These are backyard cottages, garage apartments, and small standalone rentals tucked into existing neighborhoods. The goal is adding housing without tearing neighborhoods apart or waiting years for big projects.

Anchorage needs units now, not someday. With inventory tight and rentals disappearing fast, ADUs are one of the quickest ways to add doors people can actually afford.

For homeowners, this changes the math. A lot of people who were stuck at the design or approval stage can finally move forward.

For renters, it means more options spread across the city instead of fighting over the same few listings. It’s a small shift that could quietly unlock hundreds of new homes.

If you own property in Anchorage, this just opened a new lane.
