Anchorage Loosens the Rules

The Anchorage Assembly advanced several zoning and housing code changes aimed at unlocking more multifamily development. Updates to site access rules and development standards are meant to make it easier to actually build, not just talk about it. These changes target long-standing barriers that have slowed projects across the city.

The push comes as Anchorage continues to face a severe housing shortage. Rents are high, inventory is tight, and new construction hasn’t kept pace with demand. Supporters see this as a practical step toward adding more apartments, townhomes, and mixed-use projects in established neighborhoods.

Opposition hasn’t disappeared, but momentum clearly hasn’t either. This is another signal that Anchorage is serious about building more housing, even when it’s uncomfortable.
