Anchorage hits a grim record

It’s my goal to keep this channel in a positive light but you need to hear this one purely for awareness.

The city recorded 15 pedestrian deaths in 2025, the highest total Anchorage has ever seen. That number pushed city leaders to start seriously discussing Vision Zero strategies aimed at slowing traffic and redesigning dangerous roads.

The ideas on the table aren’t small tweaks. Officials are looking at road diets, lower speed limits, and automated traffic enforcement on corridors with repeated crashes. Many of the deaths happened on wide, fast arterials where crossing the street is already risky even in daylight.

This isn’t just a winter darkness issue or a one-off spike. The data shows a pattern that’s been building for years as traffic speeds increased while pedestrian infrastructure lagged behind.

For people who walk, bike, or take transit, the impact is personal and immediate. For drivers, it likely means real changes to how fast and how freely major roads move through the city.

Anchorage now has to decide whether safety outweighs speed.
